Cody Simpson submerges himself in a box of orange plastic balls as he shows off his blimp award for Fresh Aussie Muso at the 2010 Australian Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Sydney on Friday afternoon (October 8).
The 13-year-old singing sensation dished to GoldCoast.com about singing at the award show, “I was so nervous beforehand [performing with Bruno Mars] but it ended up OK, so I guess I’m ready, yes, to get up and sing live in front of thousands of people at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Lots of people ask how it felt, being out there on stage but it’s sort of hard to explain unless your talking to someone who knows how it feels to get up as a muso and sing in front of thousands of people.”
THE Gold Coast’s Los Angeles-based teen pop sensation Cody Simpson has made a fleeting one-day visit home for a catch-up dinner with family and friends.
“I guess I’ll miss some people and I’m sorry I can’t see all my mates,” says Simpson, 13, who stopped by the Gold Coast at the weekend.
“I’ll see you next time I’m back, or perhaps you can come and visit me. I miss you all.”
The former All Saints schoolboy moved to Los Angeles with his family four months ago, signed to Atlantic Records and released a single, iYiYi. His new single, Summertime, is due for release in coming weeks and his debut album comes out next year.
Simpson is back on home soil ahead of his first Australian gig at tomorrow’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
He sings iYiYi to a packed room at the Sydney Entertainment Centre with the song broadcast live into loungerooms around Australia.
Just a year ago, Simpson was a regular student and considered a rising star of the swimming pool. Then, he uploaded a couple of videos of himself playing guitar and singing songs by some of his favourite artists to YouTube. They were discovered by US record producer Shawn Campbell, a Grammy nominated record producer.
Now, he is met at airports by screaming teens. More than one has asked the young singer songwriter to marry her and have her babies.
“It sounds sort of crazy, I know,” says Simpson. “It’s been a strange sort of year. I moved to the US, got a record deal, was discovered on YouTube. Any one of those could count as the weirdest thing to happen in my life.”
Simpson is nervous and excited about singing live in Sydney tomorrow night.
“He’s an amazing singer! he deserves to win”
He performed his first real gig before thousands of screaming fans less than a fortnight ago, supporting US band Bruno Mars in Kansas.
“I totally loved it,” he says.
“I was so nervous beforehand but it ended up OK, so I guess I’m ready, yes, to get up and sing live in front of thousands of people at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
“Lots of people ask how it felt, being out there on stage but it’s sort of hard to explain unless your talking to someone who knows how it feels to get up as a muso and sing in front of thousands of people.”
Did he like the feeling?
“Yeah, definitely. It’s great getting up there, singing and having people know the words to your song and wanting to sing along.”
As for the Australian gig, he’s leaving nothing to chance. He was hard at work with an LA choreographer when he phoned in late last week and had already penciled in two days for rehearsals at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
Simpson also vies for a Kids’ Choice gong in the Fresh Aussie Muso category, where his rivals include Australian Idol Stan Walker, Sydney five-piece Amy Meredith and Los Angeles-based Adelaide singer-songwriter Orianthi Panagaris.
“A year ago I was watching the Kids’ Choice Awards. This year I’m there,” he laughs.
