Move over Justin Bieber, there’s a new YouTube star in town! Australian cutie Cody Simpson has just made the big move from down under to Los Angeles after signing with Atlantic Records. The 13-year-old has been writing songs since he was seven, and started posting them on YouTube soon after that. It wasn’t long before the Aussie cutie was discovered by producer Shawn Campbell, who has worked with everyone from Jay-Z to Ciara. Cody’s new single “iYiYi,” featuring Flo Rida, is sure to make your summer play list with its super-catchy chorus. In fact, Cody taught that chorus to a few of our summer interns when he visited us last week! See what he had to say about music, girls and his surprising backup career plans.

17: How did you react when Shawn Campbell got in touch with you?

Cody Simpson: He sent me a message through my MySpace and said, “I think you’re really talented. Get your parents to call me.” And so we Googled him and he was the real deal. So yeah, it was exciting. We called all our friends and family like, “This guy wants me to come over to the U.S.” Mom was like, “Don’t call him. He just wants to get to you.” She’s protective, but my parents have always been really supportive. They’ve always wanted me to follow my dreams and stuff. So they let me come over with my dad.

17: What was it like recording “iYiYi?”

CS: It didn’t really take long at all. It took a day or two to fully finish it up. I actually didn’t record it with Flo Rida. He went on the song elsewhere but then I came into the studio, I met with Flo Rida and we both loved the song. It came out sounding really catchy. It’s about liking a girl and missing her when she’s away.

17: Were you thinking of a specific girl?

    CS: Um… No, not anymore.

17: Do you have any celebrity crushes?

CS: Selena Gomez. I like her personality—and her looks.

17: What do you look for in a girl?

CS: I like a girl that’s just fun to be around. They make me laugh, but also they’re faithful and honest. And it’s all in the eyes.

17: Tell us about the music that inspires you.

CS: I actually grew up listening to country music. My dad really inspired me to start playing music. He played when friends came over for dinner and parties and everything and that really inspired me. I wrote my first song when I was seven and that was kind of country. Now I’m just like, “No! Why did I play country?”

17: So you don’t love it anymore?

CS: Not anymore, but I still appreciate it. I used to listen to Keith Urban and Johnny Cash and stuff. But artists that inspire me now are Justin Timberlake, and also Jason Derulo. I love his new album.

17: What advice would you give to other young musicians just starting out?

CS: I think YouTube is a great way to do it. Just work hard at it. If it’s your dream, then it’ll come. But have fun with it as well.

17: Was that what you had in mind when you started posting videos?

CS: Not at all. It’s always been my dream to sing, but I just was posting it for fun. I was actually a competitive swimmer. I was Australian champion for freestyle and butterfly, so that was my main focus and then when I got the message I was like, “No, this could happen.”

First Look: Exclusive J-14 Q&A with Cody Simpson

People are calling Australian singer Cody Simpson the next Justin Bieber, and it makes sense — they’re both adorable singers (with awesome hair!) who were discovered on YouTube. But 13-year-old Cody is definitely his own artist. He writes his own tunes and has some big name fans already – Flo Rida collaborated with Cody on his catchy debut single, “iYiYi,” which hits iTunes on June 1. Look for Cody’s album this summer, but for now, get all the deets on the new singer in this exclusive J-14 interview.

J-14: Can you tell us about “iYiYi”?
    Cody Simpson:
I worked with some amazing people on it like DJ Frankee and Colby O’Donis, as well as Flo Rida. We came up with something really catchy. It’s about missing a girl when she’s not around. Flo Rida and I recorded it separately, we both loved it. We finished fimling the music video yesterday. It’s got a laid-back beach theme to it. There’s a Flo Rida surprise in the video, so we can’t tell you yet! Sorry.

    J-14: What does “iYiYi” mean?
    Cody:
It’s doesn’t really come together until the i-yi am missing you — it’s all coming up to that!

J-14: Has the girl who influenced the song heard it?
    Cody:
She’s heard it. I think she liked it!

J-14: What was it like meeting Justin Bieber on his “Somebody To Love” video set?
    Cody:
His video looks incredible. He’s a nice kid, and it was great to meet him.

J-14: Is it true that Flo Rida wanted to discover you like Usher did with Justin?
    Cody:
No, he’s just on the same record label as me. They set us up so we could record a song together. It was fun! He’s really cool — and tall as well! Flo Rida definitely gave me advice to work hard and have fun. It’s all about having fun so enjoy it. [Justin and I] didn’t get to talk that much because he was really busy on the set.

J-14: Does it bother you to hear people compare you to him or call you a “Justin Bieber wannabe?”
    Cody:
It’s not a competition. He’s very talented, so it is flattering to be compared to him as well. His music is more R&B, but we’re both kind of pop artists.

J-14: What made you want to start posting videos on YouTube?
    Cody:
When I was about 11, I did a duet with a girl at a school concert — we performed “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. She posted that video online, and everyone started liking it, so I started posting more and more covers to YouTube of artists who inspire me like Justin Timberlake and Jason Mraz. I got contacted by a producer named Shawn Campbell, who’s produced for Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, and Ciara, and he introduced me to my manager now. He took me to New York and introduced me to record labels. I had a meeting with Atlantic Records, and they wanted to sign me. Singing was always my passion. I was also a competitive swimmer in Australia, and that was really my main focus. I would shoot videos on the side, but then everyone started liking them, so I did more and more of it.

J-14: Who is your celeb crush?
    Cody:
There are so many hot girls in Hollywood, it’s hard to choose! Miley Cyrus andSelena Gomez – I like them both.

J-14: If you could duet with anyone, who would it be?
    Cody:
Probably my celebrity crushes! “Party in the AUS.”

Cody Simpson set to become Australia’s answer to Justin Bieber

BIEBER fever is so last month – meet home-grown teen sensation Cody Simpson. The 13-year-old has been signed to US record label Atlantic – which is grooming him for a global launch

Yesterday, his first single iYiYi – with US rapper Flo Rida – was No 20 on iTunes in Australia and No. 83 in the US

In a few weeks, Simpson and his family will move from the Gold Coast to Los Angeles in the first step to tap the lucrative international pop market.

Is Cody Simpson better than Justin Bieber?

“I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to live my dream,” Simpson said yesterday.

“It’s happened so quickly and unexpectedly but it’s super-exciting, I feel so blessed.”

Simpson was contacted by US producer Shawn Campbell, who saw videos the then 12-year-old had posted on YouTube singing and playing Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake songs on his guitar.

“My mum thought he was some weirdo on the internet trying to get to me, but we Googled him and called him and he was the real deal,” Simpson said.

But the music move has come at a cost – promising swimmer Simpson has won gold medals in freestyle and butterfly.

Retired Olympic champ Daniel Kowalski said: “In 2016 he would have been winning gold at the Rio Olympics.

    “He is that good.”

Simpson admitted the choice was tough. “My dream was to go to the Olympics but I really couldn’t turn down this opportunity,” he said.

“Swimming prepared me for music – the commitment, the dedication. I do miss swimming, I have a big passion for it. I want to keep up the swimming in LA.”

Simpson will be home-schooled in LA, with English his favourite subject: “It helps me with my songwriting.”

Already there’s talk of movie roles in Hollywood and he has heard whispers of a duet with Justin Bieber.

“I met him on his new video shoot in LA,” Simpson said. “He seems like a nice guy. It’d be cool to work together.

“It’s flattering to be compared to him, he’s super-talented.”

Just a few months ago, thirteen year old Cody Simpson was strumming for friends at backyard barbecues on the Gold Coast.

Now however, he’s shooting his first single, the infuriatingly catchy “iYiYi” featuring Flo Rida with his doting dad and sister accompanying his every move. The pair are making sure Cody keeps his feet firmly on the ground, in spite of his overnight success.

With Usher paving the way for tween-sensations with Canadian crooner Justin Bieber, the future looks bright for this sandy haired singer, who was spotted on You Tube by songwriter and producer Shawn Campbell (the bloke behind Jay-Z and Missy Elliott).

Cody Simpson admits his first song was actually about putting a nappy on a chicken (er, OK). Now that things have stepped up a notch, Mez wants to know, has his dad already eyed up a sports car?

“A Cadillac Escalade” dad tells Nova’s Merrick, Dools and Ricki-Lee, though Cody will have to stick to dodgem cars for now.

On traveling with his family, Cody loves them to bits and we get the feeling fame won’t force him to do a Lindsey Lohan where they’re concerned: “They’ve all been really supportive of me, the last three times I’ve gone to the U.S I’ve gone with my dad, but we’re a really tight family so we’re all gonna stick together.”

On schooling, Cody Simpson also knows it’s important to study:
“I definitely want to keep up my full education but I might have to get a tutor while I’m away.”

    Smart move!

Ricki-Lee predicts that the girls are gonna love Cody and Merrick tells him: “Coming from a real battler who struggled a lot, you’ve got a free pass, go crazy!”

Listen to the full interview above

Cody Simpson’s debut single “iYiYi” featuring Flo Rida is on iTunes now and an album will be out before the end of the year.

Cody Simpson On Meeting Justin Bieber, Crushing On Miley Cyrus

Looking to ease the mental overload of American tweens confused by the sudden appearance of Cody Simpson (aka the Australian Just Bieber) on the pop scene, we dug up a recent interview with the 13-year-old “iYiYi” crooner to see if we could find out what makes this kid tick. And it turns out he actually met the Bieb on the set of JB’s “Somebody To Love” video shoot! Plus, he’s crushing on the highly quotable Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. This saga just gets more mind-blowing by the minute. Head below for the details!

In a sitdown with J-14—who notes that the Aussie singer has “awesome hair!”—Cody reveals the following:

On meeting Justin Bieber: “His video looks incredible. He’s a nice kid, and it was great to meet him… [Justin and I] didn’t get to talk that much because he was really busy on the set.”

On the complex meaning of “iYiYi”: “I worked with some amazing people on it like DJ Frankee and Colby O’Donis, as well as Flo Rida. We came up with something really catchy. It’s about missing a girl when she’s not around. Flo Rida and I recorded it separately, we both loved it… It doesn’t really come together until the i-yi am missing you—it’s all coming up to that!”

On whether Flo Rida is his mentor: “No, he’s just on the same record label as me. They set us up so we could record a song together. It was fun! He’s really cool—and tall as well! Flo Rida definitely gave me advice to work hard and have fun. It’s all about having fun so enjoy it.”

On his celebrity crush: “There are so many hot girls in Hollywood, it’s hard to choose! Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez—I like them both. ”

And finally, who he’d like to duet with: “Probably my celebrity crushes! ‘Party in the AUS.’”

Bada-boom-TSCH! As is often the case with barely-out-of-grade-school pop stars these days, Simpson was first noticed on YouTube.

“When I was about 11, I did a duet with a girl at a school concert,” he told J-14. “We performed “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. She posted that video online… I got contacted by a producer named Shawn Campbell, who’s produced for Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, and Ciara, and he introduced me to my manager now. He took me to New York and introduced me to record labels. I had a meeting with Atlantic Records, and they wanted to sign me.”

What do you think, kiddies—does Cody have what it takes to successfully reach soaring Biebertastic heights?
